For all the anticipation, anxiety and general pomp and circumstance that surrounded the 2012 Oscars, there were not too many surprises with regard to the actual show or its winners, save for comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's stunt with his appearance on the red carpet in character as Admiral General Aladeen, the lead character in his upcoming movie "The Dictator."
Baron Cohen made Ryan Seacrest the unwitting victim of the actor's publicity stunt when he approached the E! host armed with an urn supposedly containing the ashes of North Korea's Kim Jong Il and spilled the powdery contents of the container all over Seacrest and his tuxedo.
Baron Cohen's antics were much appreciated, judging from the smattering of celeb reactions MTV News gathered at Elton John's annual Oscar-viewing party and charity gala.
"No way. That's incredible," said Mark Foster of Foster the People upon hearing the news of Baron Cohen's stunt. "I wouldn't want Kim Jong Il's ashes on me."
"I thought it was funny and Ryan played along very well," Joel McHale said of his E! colleague Seacrest. "He's unflappable."
Both Foster and McHale agreed that Baron Cohen's antics added an extra element of excitement to the red-carpet festivities.
"It keeps things exciting. I love when people do something outside the box," Foster said.
"As long as no one was injured. No one was injured, right? I thought it was really funny," McHale added. "Sacha Baron Cohen is genius."
For his part, Seacrest seemed to take the incident in stride, and took to Twitter to make light of the "spill."
"My mom always told me to pack two jackets for red carpets, always wondered why. Now I know."

'You can never call a Meryl Streep win a real upset, because she's so beloved in the industry,' BoxOffice.com's Phil Contrino tells MTV News.

Heading into Sunday night's Academy Awards, few expected any major surprises in the top categories. "The Artist" was expected to take Best Director, Actor and Picture, while Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer had been considered locks in the supporting categories for weeks.
In the Best Actress category, however, some Oscar analysts (MTV News included) may have been too quick to call the Best Actress category for Viola Davis in "The Help." Such confidence resulted in the biggest surprise of the evening when Meryl Streep won her third Academy Award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."
So what happened to Davis? In the night that belonged so heavily to the odds-on favorite, how was it that Streep pulled off the upset?
Even Streep had to admit that most people thought the award belonged to Davis. "When they called my name," she said during her acceptance speech, "I had this feeling I could hear half of America going, 'Oh no! Oh come on, why her? Again?' But ... whatever."
Jo Piazza, the author of "Celebrity Inc.," said that the crowd's familiarity with Streep may have been her key to Oscar gold. "It wasn't Meryl's performance that gave her the edge," Piazza said. "It was the fact that she hasn't won in 30 years. Her performance was great, but that was what gave her the advantage."
The perceived disappointment was a direct result of both Davis' status as a favorite and the success of "The Help." When it came to ensemble awards, even "The Artist" couldn't come close to topping the wins for "The Help" this awards season. The cast won at the SAGs, the National Board of Review and the Broadcast Film Critics Association. It also certainly helped to have Octavia Spencer cleaning up the Supporting Actress awards wherever she went.
Because of the awards and nominations close to Davis and her strong performance in the film, many saw her as the favorite for Best Actress, despite splitting many of the key awards with Streep. Davis won over the Broadcast Film Critics Association and took home Best Actress at the SAG Awards, the last major awards show before the Oscars.
But all of that overlooks the hefty haul of awards Streep took home before last night's Academy Awards. Naturally, Streep won Best Actress at the BAFTAs, a victory undermined by the very British subject matter of "The Iron Lady, but also, more importantly, at the Golden Globes, where Streep's future Oscar seemed the most likely. Though it may have initially been thought of as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's signature celebrity-love, Streep's Globes win should have been considered more heavily when predicting the Oscars.
Streep, after all, embodied many of the key traits of an Oscar winner. She played a historical figure, donned makeup to transform into her character and is a repeat winner, so perhaps there shouldn't have been as many "Oh, no's" as there were. Phil Contrino of BoxOffice.com told MTV News that Streep's status as a Hollywood legend should have precluded any talk of upsets. "You can never call a Meryl Streep win a real upset, because she's so beloved in the industry," he said. "It's important to remember that she was running very close to Viola Davis for most of the season."

I've been watching a lot of HGTV since coming to LA. My favorite shows are House Hunters and House Hunters International. There's also another show I like to watch called For Rent, but only because it makes me angry.
When it comes to apartments/homes, I think living in New York for the past eleven years has made me bitter because there was this whiny broad on For Rent a few nights ago who was looking at a huge place—A HUGE PLACE—and was like, "There's no place for a dining room table..."

I hated her.
Now there's some stupid lady on House Hunters who wants a townhouse with a fireplace that she can turn on with a light switch. IT HAS TO BE A LIGHT SWITCH because she doesn't want to bend down and flip a switch on the floor.

Anyway, I know my LA update is WAY overdue (and truth be told I wrote a long one last week but for some reason it didn't save so I lost the whole thing and I was so angry that I just said, "Ah, f*ck it," and closed the computer instead of rewriting) but to give you a quick update, I AM SO HAPPY HERE. I MEAN, I'M REALLY, REALLY HAPPY. And I think living here and watching HGTV—both of these things combined—has made me realize that New York was just beating me down. I mean, the fireplace lady—yes, she's an idiot. But there's nothing wrong with wanting a dining room table. Why did I get so mad at that lady?
Since being here, at least once a day I ask myself why I have lived in New York for so long. (It's like I had Stockholm Syndrome or something.) CALIFORNIA IS AWESOME. It's like the promised land. It's sunny all the time and there are birds and flowers everywhere. I have space out here. I have a sofa on the patio out here. I HAVE A SOFA OUTSIDE. I haven't seen one rat since I've been here. But hummingbirds? THEY ZIP BY MY HEAD EVERY DAY. I am so happy.
I'm supposed to go back to New York in November, but truth be told, I'm not sure I will.

In his ninth time hosting the Academy Awards, Crystal isn't planning to 'go after people' like some recent awards-show emcees.

Although Billy Crystal wasn't the Academy's first pick to host the Oscars this year, the veteran emcee is a breath of familiar air to Hollywood's main event.
This year marks Crystal's ninth time hosting the show, and at age 63, he will be the oldest solo host of the event since Bob Hope in 1978 (Steve Martin was 64 when he co-hosted with Alec Baldwin in 2010). Coincidentally, the "When Harry Met Sally" star received a standing ovation from the Oscar audience last year when he appeared onstage briefly to honor Hope.
While some awards-show hosts of late have ventured into taboo and risky territory (see: Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais), Crystal has always carried out his duties with class and his own special brand of charisma, charm and wit.
"It's important that the show be good, and I take it really seriously," Crystal told Entertainment Weekly about the pressures and importance of the job. "That whole concept of 'I want to really go after people' — I don't understand that. Is it a roast or is it an awards show? Do you dislike these people? I have a different bar. If there's a good target and they deserve it, you can kid them in the right way. But it's not the place to go out there and hammer people, because who am I? There's many times we've kicked out jokes because they were too personal."
It is very clear that Crystal will not be going for the jugular, which is more than fine by us, since the Oscars have a decidedly more serious and regal tone. This year's ceremony will be helmed by a man who respects the industry and appreciates the pomp and circumstance of it all. And while we likely won't witness any gasp-worthy jokes or quips, we can expect to feel warm and welcome via another one of Crystal's lively movie montages at the start of the show, along with a few lighthearted tongue-in-cheek remarks that make us all feel like we're in on the joke and invited to the party.

Sacha Baron Cohen finally addressed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' decision to ban him from attending Sunday's Oscars, releasing a video and calling in to "Today" as Admiral Gen. Shabazz Aladeen, his character in the upcoming film "The Dictator," to promise "unimaginable consequences" if he is not permitted to attend.
Baron Cohen was initially invited to the Oscars because he appears in one of this year's Best Picture nominees, Martin Scorsese's "Hugo." The actor's in-character appearance was intended to generate publicity for the film, a tactic with which the Academy apparently took issue. Purists believe such promotion is inappropriate, as the Academy hasn't even allowed advertisements for films to run during the Oscar telecast until this year.
"Good morning, great Satan of America. How are you? I am fine, thank you. On behalf of the nation of Wadiya, I am outraged at being banned from the Oscars by the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Zionists," Gen. Aladeen said in a video address posted to the Republic of Wadiya website. "While I applaud the Academy for taking away my right to free speech, I warn you that if you do not lift your sanctions and give me my tickets back by 12 p.m. on Sunday, you will face unimaginable consequences. ... On top of all of this, I paid Hilary Swank $2 million to be my date and she will not refund a penny. My Sunday calendar is now as empty as a North Korean grocery store.
"But whatever happens, I still plan to attend director Brett Ratner's afterparty, since it is impossible to catch herpes twice," he continued. "Death to the West. And good luck, Billy Crystal. You're fantastic." At the video's conclusion, in a likely statement on what Baron Cohen believes inspired the Academy to ban him from attending in character, he concludes the video by saying, "How was that? Did I sound crazy enough?"
This morning, during a call-in interview on "Today," Cohen-as-Aladeen declared, "Normally I would be impressed by an act of cowardice by a faceless regime. But this is personal."
This isn't the first time Baron Cohen has been shunned by the Academy after declaring his intention to show up in character. In 2007, Baron Cohen was asked to be a presenter but said he would do it only if he could be in character as Borat, the fictitious Kazakh journalist he played in the blockbuster film of the same name. Oscar execs said no, and Baron Cohen did not attend the awards -- though he was not officially banned from attending the ceremony.
The actor also appeared in character as Brüno, a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion reporter, at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. During the ceremony, the actor, dressed as an angel with his buttocks exposed, landed in the lap of Eminem, spurring the rapper to storm out of the ceremony. It was later revealed that the stunt was rehearsed.

Presented by Perrier-Jouet while held at Cecconi?s, Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow looked stunning as she co-hosted the soiree alongside Women in Film President Cathy Schulman.
Joining Miss Paltrow were a flock of fabulous females including former "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens and "Wizards of Waverly Place" darling Selena Gomez, as well as Oscar nominated "The Help" co-stars Viola Davis, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer.
Meanwhile, Gabourey Sidibe, Jennifer Morrison, Blythe Danner, Ari Graynor, Jennifer Beals and Christine Lahti rounded out the impressive guest list.
The Women In Film Pre-Oscar Cocktail Party comes as the biggest names in show business ready for the 84th Annual Academy Awards, which will be airing live from The Kodak Theatre on Sunday, February 26th at 8PM ET on ABC.

Robert Pattinson's co-star describes the David Cronenberg film to MTV News as 'an exceedingly strange movie.'

David Cronenberg's next film, "Cosmopolis," may have won MTV's Movie Brawl thanks to the support of die-hard Robert Pattinson fans, but one of his co-stars told MTV News the film will be far from what Twilighters are expecting.
While promoting "Goon," a film he stars in and co-wrote, Jay Baruchel shared his experiences working for a short period of time on the Manhattan set of "Cosmopolis." Unfortunately for the Pattinson fans out there, according to Baruchel, Cronenberg's next movie might be too strange for them.
"An exceedingly strange movie," Baruchel said, describing "Cosmopolis." "All the Team Edward girls won't be seeing this one, I don't think."
For Baruchel, working with Cronenberg — who made a name for himself with horror films — was a dream come true. "Basically, it was that Cronenberg is a hero of mine. I'm a Canadian boy. I love horror. That's all I want to do," Baruchel said. "If you're a Canadian horror fan, Cronenberg's the Holy Grail."
The opportunity for Baruchel came about in a rather mundane way, but his reaction to it was anything but. "I was in Manhattan last year, keeping my lady company, and they called up and were like, 'Hey, do you want to do two days on this new Cronenberg?' I said, 'Yep!' 'Wait, wait. We'll send you the script.' I couldn't care less; what I'm playing is a means to an end. I just want to go and film-nerd-out about 'Videodrome' with him for two days."
The actual experience of working with Cronenberg did not disappoint. "Not only did I get to go and be a fly on the wall for two days and watch one of my heroes do his thing, I actually had the pleasure being directed by him," Baruchel said. "Coolest thing ever."

<P>Fans who want to hear some new music from <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> won't have to wait much longer. The singer has revealed that he's set to drop not one but two singles in the very near future. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="id:1672718" width="240" height="211"></div><p> First off, Bieber's <a href="/news/articles/1679414/justin-bieber-far-east-movement-studio-redone.jhtml">collaboration with Far East Movement</a>, which also features Party Rockers LMFAO, drops on Tuesday. The <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/justinbieber" target="_blank">Twitter</a> announcement for the release included the hashtag "#LiveMyLife," perhaps a hint as to the name of the song. The song's producer, RedOne, recently spoke to MTV News about the track. "I did a few songs with Far East Movement, and one of the songs ... to me, it's a smash," he said. "And Justin sang the chorus. It's a really good song, and I think people are gonna dance like crazy to it." In addition to the release, Bieber revealed that the first single off his forthcoming album <i>Believe</i> will drop in March. "And u guys keep asking. so yeah. my single is NEXT MONTH>#BELIEVE," he wrote. Little else is known about the song, but given the caliber of talent he's been recording with for the album of the same name, it's certain to be something his Beliebers will look forward to. For the album, he's hooked up with everyone from Pharrell and Rodney Jerkins to Drake, Lil Wayne, Timbaland and will.i.am. "The only conversation we've had about <a href="/news/articles/1675015/justin-bieber-new-album.jhtml">Justin's album</a> that we're about to do is it's really important that it's the proper transition, because we've seen him [with] 'Baby,' now we're watching him grow up," vocal producer Kuk Harrell told us. "And we can't just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There's a record in between." It's an exciting time for Bieber. As he continues to up his professional game, he's also about to celebrate a personal milestone: The teen star will turn 18 on March 1.</p>

<P>On November 1, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> will take his fans <a href="/news/articles/1672827/justin-bieber-under-the-mistletoe.jhtml"><i>Under the Mistletoe</i></a> on his holiday album. But he's giving them an early treat by releasing his <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> duet, "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," on Monday (October 24). </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="id:1672718" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The song dropped on Ryan Seacrest's <a href="http://ryanseacrest.com/2011/10/24/usher-premieres-duet-with-justin-bieber-chestnuts-over-an-open-fire-audio/" target="_blank">radio show</a>. Its vibe is reminiscent of '90s R&B tracks, and it sounds a lot like it could have been recorded by Boyz II Men, who also appear on the album. The Christmas classic is all about the little joys of the holiday season, including the family get-togethers, the food and Santa bringing presents to children. The song, one of the classics that appears on the album, hits iTunes on Monday. Bieber and Usher previously appeared together on "Somebody to Love" off <i>My World 2.0.</i> "Justin and I did the classic record 'Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.' This record is going to be remembered for years to come," Usher told Seacrest on Monday morning. "It's a record that has always been one of my favorites, and I'm happy that I was able to share it with Justin, and for us to put it out. The album is full of surprises. Justin's <i>Under the Mistletoe</i> is going to be incredible!" In the lead-up to the release, Bieber <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/justinbieber/status/128163827832467456" target="_blank">released</a> some behind-the-scenes footage of his mentor and him in the studio working on the song. He also shared that he had another surprise in store for his fans. Just one week after dropping the video for "Mistletoe," he <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/justinbieber/status/128479978106003456" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "Up early to shoot another video for #UNDERTHEMISTLETOE #Nov1st but something else is out this morning...." The publication's editorial director, Janice Min, presided over a bash that brought out Midnight in Paris stars Owen Wilson and Michael Sheen, though Michael's real-life leading lady, their costar Rachel McAdams, sat things out. Jessica Chastain is in the running for a best supporting actress statue for her work in The Help, and she made the rounds with best pal Jessica Weixler. Brooklyn Decker also stepped out to say hello to producers and writers from movies like The Descendants, The Artist, and Moneyball. THR's bash was one of many that went down in Hollywood last night in the run-up to Sunday's Oscars. <P>It's prom season, and that means high schoolers across this great land will be renting tuxes, buying fancy dresses and negotiating the details of their curfews with parents. So, before you take your pictures and get in your limos, we asked some Hollywood A-listers to recall their fondest prom memories. "I had a great prom," Ne-Yo told MTV News. "I didn't get to go with who I wanted to go with. I got my second choice, but my second choice turned out to be the one I was supposed to be there with, so it turned out good." </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:647708" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Ke$ha, never one to say no to a party, had the best night of all her friends. "I went to prom with my gay best friend, and let me tell you, I had way more fun than anybody else at a prom with their boyfriends," she recalled. "Everybody else was, like, crying and drama and breaking up, and me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m." "Hellcats" star Aly Michalka doesn't have a favorite prom memory — because she never went to prom. "I was homeschooled, so I don't even think we had a fake prom," she lamented. "Like, maybe we had a home-school prom and I wasn't invited?" While everything always seems to be in peril on "The Vampire Diaries," star Nina Dobrev had a less tumultuous night: "Having everyone get together and such a final celebration [is what I remember]." Romeo went big for his prom. "My senior prom, I remember I pulled up in my red Ferrari. I was feeling like James Bond," he said. "And it was one of the best nights of my life." "My favorite prom memory was probably going shopping for a dress, and our boyfriends at the time dressed up as 'Dumb & Dumber,' " Audrina Patridge laughed. "And so we were like, 'We can't dress up dorky ... we have to look good.' " Roots drummer ?uestlove made a big decision on the night of his prom: "June 2, 1989, was my very last haircut; prom haircut, totally butchered my hair. He butchered my hair, and I vowed never again to ever get in a barber chair, so I grew that Afro on my prom night." Adam Lambert said his prom date was a 10, so he definitely had a fun night. "I had a great prom. I had an awesome time," he said. "I went with one of my best friends in high school. Her name was Lauren, and she was really hot.
